Sonmiani Beach has a variety of fish species including the Portuguese man-of-war. Among the numerous invertebrate species found there are protozoa, annelids, and mollusks. 

According to the sources, there are numerous marine plants in the area. More than 350 distinct fish species are known to exist in the region. The Sonmiani Bay region of Miani Hor is where the shrimp trawling grounds lie, and shrimping is another activity carried out in shallow waters. Important fish species include pelagic, demersal, shrimp, lobster, crab, and even sharks. 

Moreover, there are significant populations of migratory and local aquatic birds nearby. 

In the winter, Sonmiani generally receives more than 20,000 birds from 52 species. It is a certified Ramsar site in Pakistan. 

The area is also recognized by the WWF as one of the top 200 eco-regions in the world and as a prime example of a crucial habitat type. It is a part of the Arabian Sea Ecoregion. It is the home of pelicans, flamingos, grebes, herons, cranes, storks, gulls, and terns. 

Talking to the media, the officials of the beach said that there are a few activities that people can do on the beach apart from enjoying the weather itself. But for that visitors must have to inform the management 24 hours prior as they need to arrange this facility on demand.

• Camel/horse ride – 500 PKR for half an hour 

• Bonfire/BBQ – 1,000 PKR each 
• Beach buggy – 1,000 PKR for half an hour

Due to the recent Monsoon massive flood damages in July and August, this year have caused great destruction in West Zone, mainly in the Hub-Uthal-Bela section of National Highway N-25, consequently collapsing Hub Bridge. 

In this regard, the construction contract of the Hub Bridge has been awarded to National Logistics Cell (NLC). Provincial Communication and Works Department, Balochistan had constructed the bridge in 1962. 

Official information revealed that the field staff was available on sites and had successfully completed temporary restoration work on an emergent basis for smooth traffic flow. Sources said that all the damaged sections of National Highways in Balochistan have now been restored temporarily and traffic has been resumed. 

Currently, NLC is engaged in a detour of this bridge to facilitate the road travellers’ (HTV/LTV) temporarily until the new bridge and detour are constructed within one month. 

A senior official stated that considering the work urgency in the larger national interest, the National Highway Council approved to carry out of permanent restoration works on a G-2-G basis according to Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) Rules from state-run agencies. 

He further said NHA in collaboration with Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Frontier Works Organization (FWO), NLC, and National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) already carried out a joint survey of flood damages while Foreign Consultant would also carry out an assessment/rehabilitation and fresh Hydrology/Hydraulic study. 

Moreover, heavy structures of N-25 between Hub to Quetta, constructed by the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, were also critically damaged and collapsed during devastating flooding. This included Lunda Bridge at 121km, Khanta Bridge at 116km, five Culverts between 130-160km, and Sardi Wala Bridge at 216km. 

“The NHA has requested NESPAK to submit the same within the shortest possible time but no later than one month, so the same should go through the execution phase by completing all procurement/codal formalities in the best interest of road commuters,” said the official.

The mega-project is executed in the same vein as CPEC, which has a special focus on agricultural development and people’s living.  

Though the project is not a part of CPEC, it is among those initiatives that receive progressive vibes from many agro-based development projects under CPEC.   

As there is no canal system for irrigation in Balochistan, however, after the completion of the Kachhi Canal, the cropping concentration of sorghum, pulses, oilseeds, and wheat will be increased up to 88.5 percent by approximately Rs19.66 billion (Rs3.82 billion for phase-I) added to the national economy annually. 

Besides, the project would produce hundreds of thousands of jobs as well. Areas including Naseerabad, Kachhi (Bolan), Dera Bugti, and Jhal Magsi will benefit.    

Kachhi Canal also called the ‘Green Revolution’ project of Balochistan, apart from irrigating barren lands, would also alleviate drinking water stress for about two million people, according to the sources.  

Moreover, KCP is started in a typical arid zone climate that has high temperatures and low rainfall where economically sound agriculture is impossible under irrigated conditions. But with this initiative, situations will be changed for the poor people of Balochistan, the most underdeveloped part of the country. 

As per the officials, the project is financed by the federal government through its Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) while the development work of the project is being carried out by WAPDA in association with the Kachhi Canal Consultants. 

So far, an amount of around Rs100 billion has been spent on the project since its start in 2002. 

A senior WAPDA official said that the authority has already built a 363-km main canal and 81-km long allied water distribution system which irrigate 72,000 acres of land in Phase-I. “Kachhi Canal is a vital project to alleviate poverty and eradicate extremism in remote and backward areas of Balochistan by developing irrigated agriculture and an agro-based economy in the province”, the official added.
